Tip 1. Start early
When you first wake up, you’re not looking to prepare for the evening’s bedtime. But you should be. By eating within half an hour of rising, you are stabilising your blood sugar levels, meaning it’s easier for your body to create the melatonin needed later for a better night’s sleep.
Tip 2. Make good choices
Why do we choose caffeine? To keep ourselves awake! Cutting back on stimulants like caffeine can help your body’s natural functions when it comes to preparing for sleep. When we start getting better sleep, we will stop relying on tools like caffeine to keep us going – our well-rested bodies will do that for us. Try herbal teas like Chamomile for a great alternative night-time drink.
Tip 3. Switch off…
We should all treat our bedrooms as VIP access only – banning all tech at the door! Screens and lights only keep our senses active and alert. Removing tech one hour before bed helps our minds and bodies understand that it’s time to switch off, just like our phones, tablets and televisions.
Tip 4. Tired but wired
Noise in your head? Moments of the day revolving in your mind? Even when you’re tired, you can experience restlessness and struggle to sleep. Try some mindfulness meditation to clear your head of uninvited thoughts and drift off peacefully or keep a notebook beside your bed to transfer thoughts from your head to the page. You can deal with those thoughts tomorrow.
